Somerset

 

Wells

Wells is a town in somerset, and the most famous attraction there is the Wells Cathedral. Wells is England's Smallest cathedral city. It has managed to guard much of its medieval character, and the cathedral is one of England's finest, which one of the best surviving examples of a full cathedral complex.

 （Wells， 是somerset的一个小镇。它是英格兰最小的一个有大教堂的城市，威尔斯大教是英格兰最漂亮的教堂之一. 这个城市也是很具有中世纪色彩的城市）

 

Wells Cathedral (威尔斯大教堂)

After the first Church of St Andrew, built around AD700, fell into decay, the present Cathedral Church of St Andrew was built in stages between 1180 and 1508.
（这个教堂一开始的时候是St Andrew建于公元前700年，在它的倒塌后，现在的大家堂是建于1180 到 1508 年之间。 至今也有好几百年的历史了）

It is most famous asset is the wonderful west front, an immense sculpture gallery with over 300 figures, built between 1230- 1250 and restored to its original splendor in 1986. Apart from the figure of Christ, installed in 1985 in the uppermost niche, all the figures are original.

2 Scissor arches (see my photo Album)

Inside, the most striking feature is the pair of scissor arches, which separate the nave from the choir, a brilliant solution to the problem posed by the gradual subsidence of the central tower; they were added in the mid-14th century, shortly after the tower's completion.

3 Mechanical Clock (see my photo Album)

It is the second-oldest surviving in England after the one is Salisbury cathedral. The clock shows the position of the planets and the phases of the moon, there's an entertaining cabaret act performed above it on the hour, by jousting knights or horseback.

The ceiling ribs of which sprout like a palm from a central column.

Cheddar

Cheddar is just next to the wells and in somerset as well. The most famous Cheddar Cheese come from here! And in ord time, visitors come here to see the Cheddar Gorge and take some cheese back home, this made the cheddar cheese famous!

 （Cheddar和Wells很近，都在Somerset。以前，人们来这里观光这个峡谷，然后他们走的时候就带走一些奶酪，这样这里的奶酪就成了今天世界文明的切达奶酪）

The Mendips' most dramatic scenery can be found alone its southern side where Cheddar Gorge cuts a mile long swathe through the landscape, exposing great sections of 138m high, gray stone cliff.
